About this book
Grettir the Outlaw by S. Baring-Gould bears the subtitle A Story of Iceland and includes a preface. The preface recalls having only a Danish grammar of Icelandic and an Icelandic-Danish dictionary, without knowing a word of Danish. The account says Onund was healed of his wound but thereafter walked with a wooden leg, receiving the name Onund Treefoot.
Grettir would not remain at home after the slaying of Thorbiorn Oxmain, for fear that trouble might come. The quoted verses recall fighting with a sword in youth and describe nineteen years spent as a hunted man on mountain, moor, and fen, obliged to shun and flee.
