About this book
Naples, Past and Present is a book by Arthur H. Norway. The prefatory note says the book is designed not as a guide, but as supplementary to a guide. The prefatory note says the best of guide-books, even that of Murray or of Gsell-Fels, leaves a whole world of thought and knowledge untouched.
The book describes the handsome steeple of the Carmine as belonging to a church sorely injured and defaced, but still abounding in romance, where lies the boy-king Conradin and where, too, the fisherman Masaniello met his end, after a trick of fortune had made him ruler of Naples for eight days. The book says there was surely an age when the lazzaroni were really picturesque, when they lay on the warm sand in the sunshine. A passage says that on the summit Braccini found a profound chasm, a mile in circuit, surrounded by a bulwark of calcined stones, on which no vegetation grew.
