About this book

Freedom in Service is by F. J. C. Hearnshaw and is described as six essays on matters concerning Britain's safety and good government. The contents list essays titled The Ancient Defence of England, Compulsory Service and Liberty, and The Voluntary Principle, among others. The text says universal service was, it is true, an obligation, but it was more: it was the mark of freedom, and not to be summoned stamped a man as a slave, a serf, or an alien.

The text says that extremists want to have it both ways, to enforce law with majestic severity as the Will of the People when they are in a majority and to defy it with conscientious obstinacy as a violation of personal freedom when they are in a minority. The text says no pretension is made that the State is of supernatural origin, and no claim to divine right is advanced.
