About this book

An Old Master, and Other Political Essays is a book of political essays. A section headed CHARACTER OF DEMOCRACY IN THE UNITED STATES says that everything apprises us of the fact that we are not the same nation now that we were when the government was formed. The section also says that we deemed ourselves rank democrats, whereas we were in fact only progressive Englishmen.

The text says that the serious forces of democracy will be found, upon analysis, to reside not so much in the disturbing doctrines of eloquent revolutionary writers as in the educational forces of the last hundred and fifty years. The text says that through the mighty influences of commerce and the press the world itself has become a school. The text speaks of standing face to face treating with one another, agreeing upon terms of command and obedience, as at Runnymede, and says that liberty has encroached upon sovereignty and set bounds to it.
