About this book
Freedom, by Mack Reynolds, carries the line "Freedom is a very dangerous thing indeed. It is so catching, like a plague, even the doctors get it." Ilya Simonov drives a Zil aircushion convertible along the edge of Red Square until he reaches "the old baroque palace which housed the Ministry". Kliment Blagonravov, the security head, asks "How was Magnitogorsk?", and Ilya Simonov answers "Terrible, I loath those ultra-industrialized cities."
Ilya Simonov calls his mission "A routine matter" and reports that "A dozen or so engineers and technicians", along with others, "had formed some sort of informal club". Catherina suggests dinner to discuss her "opinions on possible changes", and Ilya Simonov is "only mildly surprised at her suggesting a rendezvous with him". Simonov says he wanted "to regain those reports I made in the early days of my assignment", where he listed "some fifty names, names of men and women who are now my friends".
