About this book
The Man Who Played to Lose, by Laurence M. Janifer, carries the line "Sometimes the very best thing you can do is to lose." In a control room the Captain stands up and gives a salute, and the man he salutes says "I'm not an officer" and "I'm not even an enlisted man." The narrator, who is addressed as "Mr. Carboy", says that off the job he is "no more than Ephraim Carboy, citizen".
The narrator says he wants to know "as much about the place as possible" because "the facts that reach Earth may be exaggerated, modified, distorted or even out of date". Asked whether the war is definitely over, a speaker answers "That depends" and says "The armies have surrendered, and the treaty's been signed". A speaker describes Wohlen as "a jungle world, mostly" and adds "Sixty per cent water, of course". A speaker tells Hollerith that James Carson was a reasonably big wheel around Ancarta and "wasn't in sympathy with the Government".
