About this book

Medal of Honor, by Mack Reynolds, carries an introductory line saying that according to tradition the man who held the Galactic Medal of Honor could do no wrong, and that in a strange way Captain Don Mathers was to learn that this was true. Sub-lieutenant Donal Mathers reports to the Commodore, who tells him that he has been out only five days. Don Mathers wonders what the Commodore knows about space cafard, about the depthless blackness and the wretchedness of free fall.

Don Mathers says he is tendering his resignation to help in the developing of Callisto and the other Jupiter satellites, and doggedly adds that perhaps his prestige will help bring volunteers to work the new mines out there. Max Rostoff snarls a curse with his finger whitening on the trigger, and Don Mathers falls sideward, his hand streaking for his weapon.
