About this book

In the forests of Gascony, twin brothers Gaston and Raymond grow up at a mill while hearing stories of the lands their family has lost. Gaston dreams of recovering the castle of Saut for the De Brocas name, and asks his brother to think beyond their familiar woodland life. Their hopes take shape against the rivalry of the English and French crowns in this historical adventure for younger readers, set in the time of the Black Prince.

Raymond's interests also reach towards learning and faith. In a later passage, he studies religious writings with his cousin John and finds increasing pleasure in his meetings with Joan Vavasour. Joan resists a proposed family alliance, while rumours of wealth and the ability to transform metals complicate the match. The novel offers readers a medieval world where inherited rank, personal affection and ideals of knighthood shape young people's ambitions.
