About this book
Friction, Lubrication and the Lubricants in Horology is by W. T. Lewis. The contents list includes, among others, chapters called Lubricants in Horology and Elementary Physics Relating to Friction and Lubrication. The text says John Wing of New Bedford, Mass., states in answer to inquiries that their supply of oil comes from the porpoise and blackfish taken during the summer months on the coast of Africa, above the equator.
The text gives the method of oiling capped jewels as given by Saunier, who advises that when a drop of oil is introduced into the oil cup of the balance pivot-hole, a very fine pegwood point be inserted so as to cause the descent of the oil. The text says the scape-wheel, mainspring and other parts should be so handled as to allow no perspiration to become deposited on any surface which may require oiling, as the acids contained in the perspiration will exert an injurious effect on the oil.
