About this book

A glowing watch dial in a frontline trench introduces the importance of keeping time together. The soldier watching it thinks of the schedules governing work, travel and meals back home. Harry Chase Brearley uses this scene to lead into the history of time measurement, from changing shadows to clocks and watches. Published in 1919, the book includes chapters on water clocks, hourglasses, watchmaking in England, France and Switzerland, and the growth of an American industry.

The account also examines the business of putting watches into people's hands. Its discussion of Waterbury describes puzzle contests and watches offered with clothing purchases, then considers how these promotions affected ordinary dealers and the company's reputation. Appendices provide an explanation of watch mechanisms, a chronology of American manufacturers and a dictionary. Readers interested in technology and industrial history will find mechanical development connected with the selling practices that shaped an everyday object.
