The Modern Clock studies time keeping mechanism, with construction, regulation and repair as its stated subjects and numerous illustrations and diagrams accompanying the text. The instructions for an escapement specify sheet steel for the stops and require hardening of the locking faces, pallet stops, lifting planes and lifting pins. Some very fine escapements have jeweled faces on their blocks, according to the account of these components.
The discussion of electrical contacts explains that platinum tips prevent burning from sparking when the circuit makes and breaks. A resistance coil connected in series with the magnet coil reduces both the sparking and the amount of current used.
