About this book
From North Pole to Equator is subtitled Studies of Wild Life and Scenes in Many Lands, by the naturalist-traveller Alfred Edmund Brehm, author of Bird-Life and Tierleben. The English edition is dated 1896, translated by Margaret R. Thomson and edited by J. Arthur Thomson, with eighty-three illustrations from original drawings.
One passage describes the ostrich on the steppe: tall enough to see over the grasses, far-sighted and shy, feeding busily in the early morning and evening, resting at noon and dancing in a circle. It says the birds eat a great deal, and that a troop will strike a weaker meat-eater to the ground with its legs. Another passage tells of the horses of the Kirghiz, where each herd has a stallion as master, with mares and foals of different ages. A third describes the border where steppe meets forest, with a region called Taiga in the Altai between Schlangenberg and Salain.
