About this book
The Romance of Insect Life is a book by Edmund Selous, with interesting descriptions of the strange and curious in the insect world. A caption headed FIRE BEETLES AS LANTERNS says the Aztecs of Mexico were accustomed to use these insects to light them through the forests by night. The text says Dr. Powell tells us that the stridulating organs of the cicada are constructed on a principle unique in nature, viz. a vibrating membrane.
The text quotes a saying of the Greeks: "Happy the cicadas' lives, Since they all have voiceless wives." The text names a little green caterpillar Anæa, giving the name as found, and says that the caterpillar, feeding along the midrib of the leaf, gnaws out a number of such little pieces, more or less like itself. The text says that no bees possess such powers of twisting about and doubling round their abdomens as do wasps, though some can do so in a very fair degree.
