About this book

A ruler's failing health and a stricken landscape become linked clues in Jessie L. Weston's investigation of Grail legends. Her 1920 study examines medieval romances through comparisons with religious ritual and beliefs about the renewal of life. The contents introduce the tasks of Gawain and Perceval, the Fisher King and the Waste Land, then move through nature worship, ceremonial dances and the meanings attached to sacred objects.

Weston argues that cups, lances, swords and related symbols should be considered together when tracing the traditions behind the stories. She tests her interpretation against different accounts of the king, his condition and his connection with the land. This is literary criticism shaped by comparative religion, with an argument built from recurring details and variations between texts.
