About this book

Ghosts, devils, and other unearthly figures become subjects of literary study in Dorothy Scarborough's 1917 survey. Beginning with Gothic romance, she examines how supernatural themes change across English fiction, with particular attention to the decades immediately preceding her book. Chapters address modern ghosts, folk tales, supernatural life, and supernatural science. Her introduction connects the appeal of such writing with fear, imagination, and the wish to reach beyond ordinary experience.

Scarborough compares recurring figures across several writers rather than telling a single story. One discussion traces versions of the immortal wanderer, examining how authors use the figure for religious argument, social criticism, or portrayals of human suffering. Her comments distinguish a work's message from its literary achievement.
