About this book
At the request of surviving comrades, Theodore Wilder assembled a record of Company C of the Seventh Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Published in 1866, it traces the unit's beginnings among Oberlin College students, linking their enlistment to Christian duty and opposition to slavery. The opening follows the rush to volunteer after the attack on Fort Sumter, the farewell at the railway depot and the company's first muster into service.
Company rolls sit alongside accounts of marches and fighting, with dates drawn from members' diaries, journals and official returns. The Gettysburg passage records repeated changes of position, the protection offered by fortifications and the names of wounded men. Wilder also attends to the exhausting heat of the roads between battles. Readers studying the Civil War or tracing individual soldiers can use this compact history to connect military movements with the people who endured them.
