About this book

For Roger Ward Babson, business prosperity depends on the habits and beliefs of the people behind it. Published in 1920, Fundamentals of Prosperity links economic security with honesty, faith, service and cooperation. An early chapter uses a Chicago bank visit to argue that a customer's savings ultimately depend on trustworthy employees and institutions, even when a vault has impressive protective equipment. Babson also urges business readers to give production and useful service more attention.

Later passages turn from money to the relationship between employers and workers. A manufacturer keeps detailed records of his cattle while treating his employees as interchangeable, an example Babson uses to press for greater personal attention to people. His arguments draw heavily on Christian belief and family prayer. Readers interested in the history of business ethics will find a short, direct account of how one writer connected commercial life with moral and spiritual responsibility.
