About this book

Samuel Smiles connects the handling of money with the habits that shape a household. In Thrift, earning, spending and saving become matters of responsibility toward family and community. The opening presents forethought and restraint as foundations of independence, while generosity gives savings a purpose beyond personal gain. A grasshopper asking bees for food in winter supplies a brief fable about the consequences of planning ahead.

This nonfiction guide moves through savings banks, cooperative societies, debt, charity and healthy homes. Its examples include manufacturers whose work and public gifts illustrate the connection between private economy and wider benefit. In the middle excerpt, Mr. Lister's donation of a park to Bradford appears alongside praise for his persistence as an inventor. Readers interested in ideas about work and financial conduct can follow how Smiles brings practical arrangements, moral arguments and individual examples into the same discussion.
