About this book
The proem presents ancient tales of Pagan days in rhymes, describing gods who display human traits and often set human beings against one another. The proem says some anecdotes told by Homer are omitted and characterizes the resulting history as slightly expurgated because older material would not pass the mails. The contents list includes Actæon, Adonis, Proserpina, Penelope, Sappho, Syrinx, Tithonus, Ariadne, Io, Dido, and Daphne among the titles.
Tithonus, described as a royal prince of Troy, chooses Aurora, goddess of the morning, for his love and wins her heart with his attentions. Aurora asks Jove to prevent Tithonus from dying. The poem describes aging in terms of gray hair, baldness, deafness, ill temper, a bent body, and wrinkles like a mummy.
