About this book
General Gatacre presents the life and services of Sir William Forbes Gatacre, with portraits, maps, and illustrations. A letter to Stephen, dated from Gatacre on July 20, 1860, reports daily work with an Alderney bull that dislikes the work and fights its handler. The brothers and sister are said to recall seeing Willie ride the animal day after day in the park.
The boys going out after wood-pigeons wear night-shirts over their clothes to make themselves less visible against the snow on the ground. The account of troops returning to Quetta describes excitement when a strong guard at the station revealed that promised treasure was on the same train. The treasure was divided amongst the Sepoys only, with shares for all who went to the mountain and extra money for those who actually took part in the fray.
