About this book
George Eliot: A Critical Study of Her Life, Writings and Philosophy is by George Willis Cooke, dated 1884. A preface to the second edition corrects a point: the essay The Lady Novelists, quoted in the seventh chapter, was written by George Henry Lewes. It also mentions three poems among the latest of George Eliot's writings.
The text quotes her poem Self and Life and speaks of Marian Evans and of Charles Bray, who is described as affected by the transcendental movement and an ardent admirer of Newman and Emerson. Another passage, on childhood memories of sunshine on the grass, refers to the backward glance of Theophrastus Such. One passage states that literature aims either to please or to quicken the mind.
