About this book
The Essays of George Eliot, described on the title page as complete, was collected and arranged by Nathan Sheppard, with his introduction on her analysis of motives. The contents list ten pieces: Carlyle's Life of Sterling, Woman in France, Evangelical Teaching, German Wit, Natural History of German Life, Silly Novels by Lady Novelists, Worldliness and Other-Worldliness, The Influence of Rationalism, The Grammar of Ornament and Felix Holt's Address to Workingmen.
In the introduction, Sheppard looks at characters such as Tito, Romola, Felix Holt and Mr. Gilfil to show his subject's interest in motives. One passage describes German peasants in the Black Forest wearing a fur cap because it was worn by a grandfather, and a Wetterau girl judged the handsomest for wearing the most petticoats. Another passage discusses ornamental design and drawings of leaves and flowers from nature.
