About this book
An unexpected inheritance gives Frank Linden a neglected North German estate and a practical problem: how to afford its recovery. His friend Judge Weishaupt advises him to marry a woman with money, while the obliging agent Wolff offers introductions to wealthy families. Wolff also holds a substantial mortgage on the property, making his attentions difficult to dismiss.
W. Heimburg builds this domestic novel around the uneasy meeting of affection, property and social calculation. In the later household scenes, Gertrude enjoys Aunt Rosa's company, learns about village life and waits anxiously for her husband's return. Wolff's visits disturb the comfortable setting of garden walks and family meals. Readers interested in marriage as both a personal bond and an economic arrangement will find those pressures expressed through sharp conversations, watchful relatives and the details of a country home.
