A later scene places Jimmie and Augusta beside a secluded mountain lake, where her delight in the landscape turns into a disturbing vision of what lies ahead. With marriage and the First World War among its subjects, the book offers readers domestic fiction shaped by both ordinary conversation and an uneasy sense of the future.
