Gitanjali
These short devotional poems carry a single, quiet motto: I am here to sing thee songs. Written first in Bengali and gathered in 1910, they speak to the divine in the language of everyday longing, addressing God as a lover, a friend, and a presence found in ordinary life rather than in temples or doctrine. Tagore prepared his own English versions, and with an introduction by W. B. Yeats the collection reached readers across Europe and America, winning him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913, the first awarded to a writer from Asia.
