About this book
Glacières, or Freezing Caverns, is by Edwin Swift Balch, a member of the Franklin Institute, the Appalachian Mountain Club and the American Philosophical Society. The text describes a cavern with a frozen water fall at its back, directly facing the entrance, streaming from a fissure. The writer says that perhaps the most remarkable feature of all were six or seven great ice stalagmites, shaped like cones or rough pyramids, which rose on the floor of the cave.
The text on how the ice forms says that in all cases it is in the spring, before the cave has parted with its store of cold, that the ice forms fastest, when both the air and the rock walls are chilled below freezing point. Mr. Robert Butler, of San José, Cal., investigated the question of cold air draughts coming from the glacière cave and from the freezing shaft he examined in Montana.
