About this book
Snow slopes, blue ice and mountain weather give John Tyndall the material for a study of Alpine glaciers. He divides his book into two parts: an account of excursions and ascents, followed by an explanation of the physical principles behind what he observes. The climbing narratives include Mont Blanc and Monte Rosa, while the scientific discussion is intended for readers without specialist training.
Careful measurement accompanies the outdoor scenes. At the source of the Arveiron, Tyndall examines cloudy glacier water, compares temperatures of water, ice, air and snow, and connects the suspended particles with ice grinding against its bed. Inside an ice vault, he describes blue light and a tall pillar of joined icicles. Readers interested in mountain travel and the history of science can follow how an explorer turns sights, instruments and physical reasoning into an account of moving ice.
