About this book
A hot August walk in the Jura leads G. F. Browne to a dark cave with an ice floor, beginning an investigation into ice that persists far below ground. Published in 1865, his account describes twelve caves he visited and brings together reports of others. Routes through woods and mountain pastures sit alongside observations of ice columns, cave temperatures and the conditions under which he took his measurements.
Browne keeps the practical difficulties of exploration in view: candles provide scant light, ice makes footing uncertain, and a missing ladder can stop a descent. Above ground, encounters with charcoal porters and meals at mountain chalets give the account a social texture. His explanations of underground ice and its prismatic structure make this useful reading for anyone interested in early field science, while the travel scenes show how closely observation depended on local knowledge and improvised arrangements.
