A disputed piano march and a bundle of private writing introduce an Austrian household divided over love and marriage. Major von Leskjewitsch finds Zdena's manuscript in a workbasket and begins speculating about her feelings for Harry, a promising young officer. His wife has different plans for the girl, and their quarrel turns questions of affection into questions of income, ambition and family expectations.
Ossip Schubin's novel moves from this comic domestic exchange to the loneliness beneath aristocratic manners. In a later passage, Lato Treurenberg looks back on a childhood shaped by distracted parents, lavish presents and evenings at his father's gaming table. The contrast gives the book its interest: witty conversation and comfortable rooms share space with emotional neglect.
