About this book
God and Mr. Wells, with the subtitle A Critical Examination of God the Invisible King, is a book by William Archer. The foreword asks whether criticism of God the Invisible King is a breach of discipline, like duelling in the face of the enemy.
The text says that Mr. Wells professes the most profound agnosticism, and quotes him as saying that there is an impenetrable curtain at the back of all known things, and that the ultimate of existence is a Veiled Being. The text asks whether one is not entitled to ask the new religion for some more definite account of the relation between God and the Veiled Being. The writer says his only objection to Providence is that it manifestly does not exist. The text asks whether Mr. Wells is quite courteous, or even quite fair, to the Veiled Being, and imagines him saying Riddle me no riddles.
