About this book
Peace and the duty to defend freedom pull in different directions in Henry Van Dyke's wartime poems. Published in 1919, this collection gathers American responses to the First World War, from calls for national resolve to tributes to the Red Cross and a welcome for returning troops. In his introductory note, Van Dyke explains that requests for a lasting version of the memorial poem "Golden Stars" led him to assemble the volume.
Christian belief shapes the language of sacrifice and hope. "Easter Road" places the desire for peace beside the suffering and promise of Easter, while "Signs of the Zodiac" uses familiar star signs to reflect on strength, friendship, justice and love. The poems offer readers a way to examine how one writer joined a commitment to peace with support for fighting, and how public verse gave expression to grief, loyalty and expectations for the world after the war.
