About this book
A wish to understand the country of Jesus draws Henry Van Dyke to Palestine, where outdoor travel becomes a way of examining his faith. In his preface, he recalls years of wanting to visit, followed by a fear that the experience might unsettle his beliefs. He eventually accepts an opportunity to write about his travels and looks for meaning in the land's hills, fields and waterways. His account combines personal religious reflection with the observations of a traveller attentive to the world around him.
The countryside east of Es Salt offers some of the book's most concrete scenes: shepherds playing pipes, farmers turning reddish soil, and herds grazing near villages of black tents. Horses, donkeys and camels prompt close description and occasional humour. Biblical memories enter these encounters with rural life, giving ordinary sights a place in the author's reflections. For readers interested in travel writing and religious thought, the appeal lies in this movement between physical surroundings and inward experience.
