About this book

When alarming news reaches Mrs. Two-Shoes's school, the children's games give way to concern for Sally Jones and her injured father. Their teacher comforts Sally, sends Tom Pidgeon to carry a message, and uses a story to explain trust in Providence. The episode shows how this children's tale combines affection, animal helpers, and direct lessons about conduct. Its schoolroom scenes make kindness and care for others part of everyday learning.

This edition reproduces the 1766 text and includes an introduction by Charles Welsh, who discusses early children's publishing and the disputed authorship. Within the story, an account of Mr. Lovewell's progress from servant to business partner connects education with honesty and steady work. Readers interested in older children's books can see how entertaining incidents served as practical and religious teaching, while the introduction explains the tale's place in nursery reading.
