About this book
An infantry battalion is warned that the field it occupies lies in a direct line regularly fired upon by a heavy German battery every few hours. The offer of shelter mentions barns and outbuildings where a good many men might find room, together with space for some of the officers to spend the night. The battalion receives an order to move company by company, and C Company occupies a barn with a shell hole and tiles damaged by shrapnel.
Larry and two companions stop a rush at the parapet by standing up and emptying their rifle magazines into men crowding into the trench. The soldiers’ talk in a dug-out centres on tanks, with accounts from men who saw them and laughter over their appearance and uncouth movements.
