About this book

A typing exercise in a telegraph office gives Joe Harned an idea: he and his friends should enlist to serve their country. Joe, Jerry Macklin and Slim Goodwin have already spent months learning telegraphy, so their instructor points them toward the Army Signal Corps. Their schoolboy enthusiasm soon meets practical obstacles, including Slim's worry that he cannot meet the physical requirements.

Published in 1918, this adventure for young readers follows the boys into the communications work of the First World War. In France, carrying an intercepted message becomes entangled with helping an injured companion through the darkness. Familiar habits from Brighton Academy, including a bird call used to summon friends, take on new urgency near the fighting. The story offers a view of wartime duty built around friendship, technical skills and decisions made under pressure.
