About this book
Grasshopper Green and the Meadow Mice is written and illustrated by John Rae. The book is the story of the grasshopper who fiddled all summer and didn't have any place to go when the cold winter wind began to blow. The hard-hearted ant refuses him a house for the winter, but a family of field mice take in Grasshopper Green and give him gooseberry syrup for his cough.
The opening note says eyes will grow big at the exciting climax of the story, when Grasshopper Green saves the mice children from a big black cat. In one scene Grasshopper Green has his tiny fiddle tuned up and Ragged Sailor gets out his accordion. Dance tunes named in the book include the Pansy Petal Polka, a great favorite with the Fairies, the Dragon Fly Dance and the Wheatfield Gavotte.
