About this book
E. Norman Gardiner's book on Greek athletic sports and festivals is dated 1910 and dedicated to F. E. Thompson in thanks for his teaching, sympathy and friendship. In the preface the author hopes it will interest the general reader as well as the student, since questions such as the place of physical training and games in education, and of athletics in national life, matter to us today as they did to the Greeks.
One passage discusses Pindar's athlete and the eleventh Olympian ode, written for Agesidamus of Epizephyrian Locri, winner of the boys' boxing match. Another describes holds in wrestling, pointing by figure number to vases such as a Munich amphora and mentioning the throw known as the flying mare and Lucian. A further passage describes ceremonial races that began at an altar and says a tradition tracing the Olympic races to them may be rejected. Illustrations such as a charioteer at Delphi are cited by figure number.
