About this book
Nicolaus of Damascus' life of Augustus is presented in translation with a commentary, as a dissertation submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The foreword explains that preferred readings and departures from the editors' texts have been indicated in the commentary wherever the texts vary.
Octavius sits on the tribunal in the centre of the forum during the Latin festival, while priests take over the consuls' jurisdiction. Octavius wants to take the field with Caesar to gain experience in warfare. Octavius remains at home without arguing when his mother Atia opposes the idea. The tribunal scene brings together people on legal business and people who have come only to see the boy.
