About this book
Dave Porter and His Rivals carries the subtitle The Chums and Foes of Oak Hall and is by Edward Stratemeyer, with illustrations by John Goss. In his preface the author says it is a complete story in itself though it is the seventh volume in a line of books about Dave.
The text names Link Merwell and Nick Jasniff, whom Dave regards with suspicion. A passage for new readers explains that Dave was once a homeless child found near Crumville, placed in the poorhouse and then bound out to Caspar Potts. Mr. Oliver Wadsworth, a rich manufacturer, takes an interest in him, and Dave is sent to boarding school. Another passage describes a football game between Oak Hall and Lemington, where Nat Poole snaps at a jeering spectator. One chapter is titled The Enemy Runs Away, and it shows Dave and his chums going to find Merwell and Jasniff.
