In a Green Shade: A Country Commentary is a 1920 essay collection by Maurice Hewlett (1861-1923), the English novelist and essayist, gathering the rural and literary essays of his last years at Broad Chalke in Wiltshire. After abandoning the historical romances that had made him famous, Hewlett settled into the life of a Wiltshire countryman and produced essay volumes on village life, books, gardening, folklore, and the condition of rural England, taking his title from Marvell’s green thought in a green shade. The essays mix close observation of downland country with bookish digression in the tradition of the English familiar essay. The collection belongs with Wiltshire Essays and Extemporary Essays among the quiet late works of a writer better remembered for medieval adventure. Free PDF download available on BDeBooks.
