About this book

Twelve-year-old Katy Carr shares a busy home in Burnet with five younger siblings, a doctor father and the exacting Aunt Izzie. The garden, orchard and low ice-house roof give the children plenty of room for play, while torn clothes and muddy hands keep their aunt occupied. Susan Coolidge's children's novel begins with the small disputes and pleasures of family life, making differences in temperament as noticeable as differences in age.

A visit from Cousin Helen introduces another way of thinking about care and kindness. Dr. Carr tells Katy about Helen's lasting disability after an accident, and the children gather eagerly to hear her stories. One exciting tale leaves little Phil frightened at bedtime. Published in 1872, the book offers readers a close view of childhood expectations, family discipline and the affection that grows through ordinary conversations.
