About this book
On a cold December morning in Holland, Hans and his sister Gretel fasten homemade wooden skates beside a frozen canal. Their mother cannot afford proper skates, but the rough pair Hans has made still gives the children hours of pleasure. Mary Mapes Dodge builds her children's novel around this family setting, combining the siblings' experiences with descriptions of Dutch places, customs and daily life.
The book also follows boys exploring Dutch towns, where conversation turns a walk through Leyden into a lesson in local history. Museums, monuments and memories of the city's hardships become part of their exchanges. Dodge's preface explains her wish to join a domestic story with the detail of a travel book.
