About this book

Ned's afternoon reading takes an unexpected turn when the King of the Gnomes appears on his windowsill and invites him into Gnomeland. A soap bubble carries them over fields and rooftops to a mountain, where an icy figure works enormous bellows and a hidden doorway leads underground. David Cory's children's fantasy fills these spaces with moving wonders, including a band whose instruments play themselves and dance.

Later encounters give Ned chances to use magic with kindness. He helps a man troubled by donkey ears and meets children living in a smoky forest hut while their father sells turpentine. A talking jackdaw suggests a way to assist the poor family. Short chapters, songs, enchanted objects and quick changes of scene make this a fairy tale for readers who enjoy impossible inventions alongside practical acts of care.
