About this book
Happy Jack is a book by Thornton W. Burgess, with illustrations by Harrison Cady. The dedication is to Dr. William T. Hornaday, described as a lifelong champion of Happy Jack Squirrel. The contents list, among others, the chapters Happy Jack Drops a Nut, The Quarrel and Striped Chipmunk Is Kept Very Busy.
The text introduces Happy Jack Squirrel, who wears a coat of gray, and Chatterer the Red Squirrel, who always wears a red coat with vest of white. The text says Happy Jack was greedy and wanted all of the big fat nuts in the top of that tree himself, hoping his cousin Chatterer would pass by without looking up. Tommy Tit says there is no one to be afraid of but Black Pussy and Bowser the Hound, and that it is easy enough to keep out of their way. The text says Happy Jack was happy and liked the house Farmer Brown's boy had made for him in the big maple tree.
