About this book

Watching an eagle far above the Briar-patch sets Peter Rabbit wondering about the white head of the king of birds. Sammy Jay answers with a story from the days when Old Mother Nature first arranged the animal world. Thornton W. Burgess uses these conversations to give familiar creatures imaginary histories, turning their markings, movements and habits into short tales for children.

The stories range from a mink learning to swim to a heron learning patience and a woodpecker receiving his red cap. In the Green Forest, curiosity also leads Peter and his neighbors to discuss why the weasel has no friends. Courage, responsibility and conduct toward others matter alongside the animals themselves. The dedication connects this storytelling with wildlife conservation, and the collection offers a way to pair an interest in outdoor life with simple fables about character.
