About this book
Castle Hill gives Walter Higgins a way to look across two versions of Hastings: the old town to the east and the growing seaside resort to the west. His account follows the town's changing fortunes through its harbour, castle and connections with the Cinque Ports, then turns towards neighbouring places including Pevensey, Battle, Winchelsea, Rye and Bodiam. Cliffs, marshes, wooded villages and quiet valleys share the scene with churches and ruined strongholds.
This illustrated travel book pairs Higgins's descriptions with paintings by E. W. Haslehust. History often explains what the visitor sees, particularly at Battle Abbey, where the account moves from the fighting of 1066 to the abbey's wealth, decline and surviving gateway. Readers interested in English coastal towns can use it to explore how landscape, old buildings and memories shaped one writer's view of the district.
