About this book
Warwickshire: The Land of Shakespeare first appeared in 1906 with 75 illustrations, was reprinted in 1912, and was issued in a revised second edition in 1922 with 32 illustrations. The text says that a district naturally escaped much of the storm and stress of invasion and attack that less happily placed districts suffered in early periods of national history. The Saxon Chronicle of 913 is quoted as recording that Æthelflæd, lady of the Mercians, went with all the Mercians to Tamworth and built a burgh early in the summer.
Kenilworth is said to have been granted by Queen Elizabeth in 1563 to her favourite, Robert Dudley, who was created Earl of Leicester in the following year. Soon after coming into possession of the fortress dwelling, Dudley set about radical alterations, and a quoted account says he gutted the keep and forebuilding, afterwards fitting them up in the Tudor style.
