About this book
The Old Road is by H. Belloc and illustrated by William Hyde. The contents list has a section called The Theory of the Old Road, headed with the words: That such and such Causes determined the Track of the Old Road, and that it ran from Winchester to Canterbury.
The writer says readers shall judge in the essay which follows the introduction, and in the diary of his journey with which the book shall close. Salisbury Plain is roughly an area of convergence, and it has been suggested that Avebury and Stonehenge drew the importance of their sites from this convergence. A sunken way of great antiquity leads directly from St. Catherine's Hill down to the river and follows the only practicable descent of the bank. The index lists, among others, St. Swithin, with his shrine at Winchester, and Salisbury Plain, the area of convergence of prehistoric roads.
