About this book
Hazlitt on English Literature is a 1913 selection of the critical essays of William Hazlitt, with the subtitle An Introduction to the Appreciation of Literature and Jacob Zeitlin named on the title page. Its preface says the selection is meant both to give an estimate of the character and scope of Hazlitt's criticism and to help in the college teaching of literature.
In one passage Hazlitt writes about the gifts of Mr. Coleridge, and quotes two lines of verse on illusion. Another passage looks back on his public and private hopes and on poets who were the friends of his youth. The volume also carries notes, some of which cite Coleridge's Table Talk on Junius and on Dr. Johnson.
