About this book
The Sacred Wood is a book of essays on poetry and criticism by T. S. Eliot, printed in London in 1920. Its title page carries a dedication to H. W. E., and a note says that some of the essays first appeared in The Times Literary Supplement, The Athenaeum, Art and Letters and The Egoist. An introduction is included.
One essay is titled "Hamlet and His Problems." In it Eliot argues that the play is the primary problem and the character only secondary, and he names Goethe and Coleridge as critics who made Hamlet a version of themselves. He also mentions small books by J. M. Robertson and Professor Stoll. Another passage turns to Catiline and The Poetaster, and to how a speech in a play should keep the audience in the position of spectators.
